Anton Fuetsch Woodcarving

Anton Fuetsch was born in the Tyrol district of Austria, a region with a long history of producing fine craftsmen. At age 14, he began a four-year apprenticeship with his uncle, Professor Gottfried Fuetsch, a master carver and one of Austria’s most honored artisans. He continued his training with a classical European education at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. He began his professional career specializing in antique restoration in Vienna.

In 1970, Anton Fuetsch moved to San Francisco, California, where fe felt he could develop a more individualistic style and also express his passion for the artistic ideals of the Romantic Movement. In San Francisco, his work included designing and carving 18th and 19th century style picture and mirror frames. In 1979, he opened his own studing in Berkeley, California, enabling him to broaden the scope of his work. One of his studio’s first major commissions was an extensive restoration project on the carousel horses in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. Today his work continues to be commissioned by individuals and organizations and is frequently shown in art exhibitions.
